Not far from some of the screening venues of the renowned KIMFF (Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival), Nepal’s equivalent of the Cannes Film Festival, Swayambunath is a Buddhist cultural and religious site well worth visiting.
Perched on a hill overlooking the capital, the sanctuary dominates the city. Tourists climb the many steep steps, one by one, to reach its plateau. Breathless, they are rewarded with an unparalleled view and a unique panorama of Kathmandu.
Amid free-roaming monkeys and vendors selling Tibetan bracelets, visitors can purchase candles and make offerings, participating in the daily life of this sacred site.
