Photo 34 - Crowded Kathmandu (1300m)

The population of Kathmandu grew shortly after the start of the civil war, which lasted a decade and ended in December 2006.

Threatened with recruitment by the Maoists, many villagers left the isolated valleys of western Nepal and rebuilt their lives, constructing houses and small apartment buildings beyond the city’s main ring road. What had been a vacant, natural area in 2006 had become densely populated seven years later.

By 2019, the city had 1.44 million inhabitants spread across nearly 51 square kilometers.
